Vikram Misri appointed as the new Foreign Secretary of India

The Indian government appointed Vikram Misri as the new Foreign Secretary. Misri, a 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, will succeed Vinay Mohan Kwatra on July 15, 2024.

Misri is currently the Deputy National Security Adviser and will assume his new role on July 15, 2024. He has served as private secretary to three Prime Ministers: Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi.

He was born in Srinagar in 1964, educated in Gwalior, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in history from Delhi University’s Hindu College and an MBA from XLRI.

Misri’s diplomatic career includes notable postings, such as India’s ambassador to China during the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes, ambassador to Spain in 2014, and ambassador to Myanmar in 2016. His early career included positions at Indian embassies in Brussels and Tunis and in various Indian diplomatic missions across Africa and North America.
