The Government has proposed to end cash payments at all National Highway toll plazas from 1 April 2026, moving towards a fully digital tolling system. As per the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), toll charges will be collected only through digital modes such as FASTag and UPI.
This initiative aims to improve operational efficiency, increase lane throughput, reduce traffic congestion, and ensure greater transparency and uniformity in toll collection. The transition is expected to enhance traffic management and commuter convenience at over 1,150 toll plazas across National Highways and Expressways, leading to a smoother and faster travel experience.
