India will be Open Defecation Free in the next five years, Sikkim first ODF state

Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, said on 6 July 2023 that the entire country will be declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) within the next five years. The focus is on providing comprehensive sanitation facilities in every village. Currently, India has achieved 40% ODF status since 2019.

Sikkim stands out as the only state that has achieved the remarkable feat of being 100% ODF plus, showcasing its commitment to sanitation.

The northeastern states have made significant strides in the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). Assam, in particular, has witnessed remarkable progress, with its development under JJM increasing from a mere one percent to an impressive 54 percent.
