National Science Day 2023 : 28th February

National Science Day is celebrated every year on 28 February in honor of India’s great physicist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman. Every year, it is celebrated to honor the value of science and remind us of its impact on the lives of mankind.

Theme :

In honor of India’s G20 leadership, the theme for this year’s event is “Global Science for Global Wellness”.

History :

Celebration of National Science Day started from 28 February 1987. The discovery of the popular ‘Raman Effect’ by CV Raman, one of the country’s physicists, was confirmed on 28 February 1928, after which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930, two years later. To celebrate this achievement, the Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Government of India, had advised to celebrate February 28 as National Science Day.

PM inaugurates Shivamogga Airport in Karnataka.

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly constructed Shivamogga Airport along with various development projects worth over Rs 3,600 crore in Shivamogga, Karnataka on 27 February.
  • This new airport has been developed at a cost of about Rs 450 crore.
  • The passenger terminal building of this airport is spread over 4340 square meters and is capable of handling 300 passengers per hour.
  • It is suitable for A-320 type aircraft. This airport is spread over 758 acres of land. Night landing facility is also available at this airport which will start after some time.

  • Dr. Balakrishnan has been cited “for his fundamental contributions to wired and wireless networking, mobile sensing, and distributed systems”.
  • He graduated with a BTech in Computer Science from IIT Madras in 1993 and received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1998.
  • Dr. Balakrishnan has previously won the Infosys Prize (2020) and the IEEE Koji Kobayashi Computer and Communications Award (2021).

Marconi Prize 2023 :

The Marconi Prize is a top honor for computer scientists and is awarded by the US-based Marconi Foundation. It is given to those who have “made a significant contribution to enhancing digital inclusion through advanced information and communication technology.”

World NGO Day 2023 : 27th February

World NGO Day is an annual international event observed on 27 February to recognize the contributions of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). It provides an opportunity to advocate for policies that support their efforts. World NGO Day aims to create awareness about this sector and encourage people across the world who work in this sector for a good cause.

History :

The Baltic Sea NGO Forum of the Council of Baltic Sea States officially recognized the day on 27 April 2010. This program was accepted by the forum in 2012. In 2014, 27 February was declared as World NGO Day and it became a landmark day for the NGO community across the world. An international calendar day, now known as ‘World NGO Day’, was inaugurated for the first time on this day.

NGOs are non-profit organizations that are independent of government and work towards a specific social, environmental or cultural goal.
