World Thrift Day 2022 : 31st October

World Thrift Day is celebrated every year on 31st October, across the world. World Thrift Day, also often called World Savings Day. However, India does this a day earlier, marking it on 30th October every year. The day is significant as it is an occasion to create awareness about the concept of saving money in the bank (so as to enrich the money supply in the country) instead of keeping it locked at home.

Theme :

The theme of World Thrift Day in 2022 is “Saving prepares you for the future”.

History :

World Savings Day was started on 31 October 1924 by the World Society of Savings Bank. The day was initiated by an Italian professor Filippo Ravizza. He called the day “International Savings Day”. Mr. Raviza’s aim in declaring this day was to create awareness among family groups to save their future, their children, medical emergencies and unforeseen situations.However, some countries have a history of celebrating Savings Day in their countries long before World Savings Day came into existence. Like Spain has been celebrating this day since 1921 and Germany started it a few years later in 1923.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy & Chirag Shetty win French Open men’s doubles title.

  • In Badminton, Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the biggest title of their career by winning the French Open Super 750 crown by defeating Chinese Taipei’s Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han in straight games in the men’s doubles final in Paris on 30th October .
  • The world number 8 pair defeated Lu and Yang to reach the 25th, 21-13, 21-19th rankings. They became the first Indian men’s doubles pair to win the French Open title.
  • Thus the Indian pair won the Indian Open Super 500 title, Commonwealth Games gold, Thomas Cup crown and an unprecedented bronze at the World Championships in August 2022.

PM lays foundation stone of C-295 transport aircraft manufacturing facility in Gujarat

  • PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the C-295 transport aircraft manufacturing plant in Vadodara, Gujarat on 30th October.
  • The C-295 transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force will be manufactured by Tata-Airbus.
  • Apart from manufacturing 40 aircraft, this facility in Vadodara will manufacture additional aircraft for Air Force requirements and exports.
  • The aircraft manufactured in India will be supplied from 2026 to 2031 and the first 16 fly-away aircraft are to be delivered to the Indian Air Force between September 2023 and August 2025.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva elected new president of Brazil.

  • Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been elected as the new President of Brazil.He defeated the incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro in a close contest.
  • Lula da Silva got 50.83 percent of the vote, while her rival Bolsonaro got 49.17 percent of the vote.
  • Lula da Silva, 76, focused her campaign on Bolsonaro’s ouster and highlighted her past achievements throughout her campaign.
  • Lula became Brazil’s first working class president in 2002 but stepped down in 2010 after two terms.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day 2022 : 31st October

The country pays tribute to the unifier of modern India, Iron Man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel India’s first Home Minister on his 147th birth anniversary on 31st October. This day is also celebrated as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. Rashtriya Ekta Diwas provides an opportunity to reaffirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation towards maintaining the unity, integrity and security of our nation.

History :

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day was introduced by the Government of India in 2014 to pay tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary for his extraordinary work in keeping India united. The first National Unity Day program was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who flagged off the ‘Run for Unity’ program in New Delhi in 2014.

Rajnath Singh inaugurates 75 BRO projects projects from Shyok, India’s last village in Leh

  • Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has dedicated Rs 2,180 crore to the nation from 75 different Border Roads Organisation, BRO, projects from Shyok, India’s last village in Leh on 28th October.
  • These projects include 45 bridges, 27 roads, 2 helipads and 1 carbon neutral housing spread across 6 states and 2 union territories.
  • 20 of these projects are in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), 18 each in Ladakh & Arunachal Pradesh, 5 in Uttarakhand and 14 in other border states of Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab & Rajasthan.

6th High Level Dialogue on Migration and Mobility between India & EU in Brussels.

  • The 6th High Level Dialogue on Migration and Mobility (HLDMM) between India and the European Union was held in Brussels on 27 October.
  • The meeting covered a wide range of issues related to promotion of safe, orderly and regular migration including prevention of irregular migration.
  • As India and the EU complete 60 years of diplomatic ties, the talks form an important dimension of the strategic partnership between India and the EU.

International Internet Day 2022 : 29th October

International Internet Day is celebrated every year on 29th October across the world to celebrate the use of the Internet for the first time. The day marks the sending of the first electronic message that was transferred from one computer to another in 1969. At that time the Internet was known as ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network).

International Internet Day History :

The Internet is defined as a remote connection between two computers. The first internet connection was made on 29th October 1969. This happened exactly two months after Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. To commemorate this event, International Internet Day was observed for the first time on 29th October 2005. International Internet Day is promoted by the Association of Internet Users.

Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise ‘Simbex’ – 2022 at Visakhapatnam.

  • Indian Navy is hosting the 29th edition of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) in Visakhapatnam from 26th to 30th October 2022.
  • SIMBEX-2022 is being conducted in 2 phases – Harbour Phase at Visakhapatnam from 26th to 27th October 2022 followed by the Sea Phase in Bay of Bengal from 28th to 30th October 2022.
  • Two ships of the Republic of Singapore Navy, RSS Stalwart (a Formable class warship) and RSS Vigilance (a Victory class yacht) had reached Visakhapatnam on 25th October 2022 to participate in the exercise.
  • The SIMBEX series of exercises was started in the year 1994. Initially it was known as Exercise Lion King.

US appoints Elizabeth Jones to serve as Chargé d’Affaires at US Embassy in New Delhi

  • The United States has appointed Elizabeth Jones to serve as the char d’affaires in New Delhi on 24th October.
  • Jones most recently served as the coordinator of Afghan resettlement efforts.
  • She previously served as Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East, and Ambassador to Kazakhstan.
  • In India, she will join US embassy and consulate teams in advancing and expanding the partnership between governments and peoples, a partnership that Secretary Blinken called the most consequential in the world.
