India’s first indigenous Automated Biomedical Waste Treatment Rig, “Sṛjanam”, at AIIMS New Delhi

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched India’s first indigenous Automated Biomedical Waste Treatment Rig, “Sṛjanam”, at AIIMS New Delhi on 10 February 2025. Developed by CSIR-NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram, this pioneering technology aims to transform biomedical waste management in healthcare facilities.

The Sṛjanam rig disinfects pathogenic biomedical waste such as blood, urine, and laboratory disposables without using incinerators, reducing environmental impact. It also neutralizes foul odors, replacing them with a pleasant fragrance. With an initial capacity of 400 kg per day, it processes 10 kg of degradable medical waste daily.

Dr. Singh emphasized India’s shift from “fragile five” to “First Five” in economic growth and highlighted the rig’s role in sustainability and waste-to-wealth transformation.
