The Merchant Shipping Bill 2024 received Rajya Sabha approval on 11 August 2025, completing its passage in Parliament. It will replace the Merchant Shipping Act 1958 to align India’s laws with obligations under maritime treaties and international instruments to which India is a party.
The Bill aims to:
- Promote the development of Indian shipping.
- Ensure efficient maintenance of Indian mercantile marine.
- Serve the national interest in maritime affairs.
