Girish Chandra Murmu, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), has been re-elected as the External Auditor of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for a four-year term from 2024 to 2027.
Murmu has been serving as the External Auditor of WHO since 2019 for a four-year term from 2019 to 2023.
The re-election took place in the Seventy-sixth World Health Assembly in Geneva, where Murmu received an overwhelming majority of 114 out of 156 votes in the first round of voting.
In his address to the World Health Assembly, Murmu outlined his vision as the External Auditor for WHO, focusing on process improvement, transparency, and a professional approach to achieve better outcomes.
The appointment of the CAG as the External Auditor of WHO is seen as a recognition of their international standing, professionalism, high standards, global audit experience, and strong national credentials.
This year, Murmu has also been selected for the position of External Auditor of the International Labour Organisation, making it the second major international audit assignment for the CAG in 2023.
