Eye flu, also known as conjunctivitis on the rise

Eye flu, also known as conjunctivitis, has been observed to be on the rise in certain parts of the country, including Delhi-NCR. However, there is no need to panic as cases are self-limiting and can be managed effectively. Dr. Jeewan S Titiyal, Chief of the Dr. R P Centre at AIIMS, New Delhi, has shed light on the nature of the infection and offered valuable advice to prevent its spread. In this blog, we will discuss what eye flu or conjunctivitis is, its common symptoms, and some preventive measures to follow.

Understanding Eye Flu:

Eye flu or conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the thin, transparent layer that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inner eyelid. The infection can be caused by viruses or bacteria, leading to various uncomfortable symptoms.

Common Symptoms:

The symptoms of eye flu may include redness, itching, swelling, excessive tearing, and a gritty sensation in the eye. These discomforts can affect one or both eyes, making it essential to take immediate precautions to prevent further spread.

Preventive Measures:

To minimize the risk of contracting eye flu and to prevent its transmission, Dr. Jeewan S Titiyal suggests a few simple yet effective home remedies. Maintaining hand hygiene is crucial, so washing hands frequently is highly recommended. Avoid touching your eyes with your hands, especially if you have been in contact with surfaces or objects that may carry the infection. Additionally, refrain from sharing towels, washcloths, makeup, or eye drops with others to avoid potential cross-contamination.
