Commonwealth Day is a global celebration celebrated annually on 13 March. However, India and some other countries celebrate it on 24 May. The day, also known as Empire Day, aims to encourage the 2.5 billion Commonwealth citizens to honor their shared values and principles, as well as the pursuit of a collective future centered on stability and peace.
In 2023, the theme of Commonwealth Day is “Forging a Sustainable and Peaceful Common Future.”
Commonwealth Day dates back to 1902, when it was established to pay tribute to Queen Victoria after her death on 22 January, 1901. This important day was inaugurated on 24 May, 1902 coinciding with the birthday of Queen Victoria. In 1958, Harold Macmillan, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at the time, acknowledged the changing dynamics of relations between Commonwealth member states.
