Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new integrated terminal building of Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair on 18 July 2023, through video conferencing. The state-of-the-art terminal, built at a cost of 710 crore rupees, is set to improve connectivity in Andaman and Nicobar. With a built-up area of 40,800 sqm, it can accommodate approximately 50 lakh passengers annually. Moreover, an Apron suitable for two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 types of aircraft was constructed, allowing parking for ten aircraft at a time.
The terminal’s architectural design, resembling a shell-shaped structure, embodies the sea and islands. Sustainability features include a Double Insulated Roofing System, skylights for natural lighting, LED lighting, and low heat gain glazing. Rainwater catchment and on-site sewage treatment with 100 percent wastewater reuse for landscaping were incorporated, along with a 500 KW solar power plant.
Being a gateway to Andaman and Nicobar’s pristine islands, Port Blair is a popular tourist destination. The new terminal is expected to enhance air traffic, boost tourism, and generate employment opportunities, contributing to the region’s economy.
