The first IIT campus outside of India will be established in Zanzibar, Tanzania. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed o n 5 July 2023between the Ministry of Education (MoE) of India, IIT Madras, and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) of Zanzibar.
The academic programs, curricula, and student selection will be managed by IIT Madras, while the capital and operating expenditure will be funded by the government of Zanzibar-Tanzania.
The campus aims to attract a diverse cohort of students, including Africans and students from other countries, and Indian students can also apply. The IIT campus in Zanzibar is envisioned as a world-class higher education and research institution, promoting competencies in response to global requirements and supporting innovation in the region.
