DRDO’s DMSRDE in Kanpur has developed the lightest Bullet Proof Jacket in India for defense against 7.62 x 54 R API ammunition, meeting Level 6 of BIS 17051 standards.

The jacket passed successful testing at TBRL, Chandigarh, complying with BIS 17051-2018.
It incorporates a new design approach, utilizing novel materials and processes.
The front Hard Armour Panel (HAP) can withstand multiple hits (06 shots) of 7.62 x 54 R API Sniper rounds in both ICW and Standalone configurations.
The front HAP is ergonomically designed, comprising a monolithic ceramic plate with a polymer backing, enhancing wearability and comfort during operations.

Smoking Ban in the UK : Bill to gradually phase out smoking

The British government proposed a landmark smoking ban to prevent young people from starting to smoke. The bill aims to make it illegal to sell tobacco products to individuals born after January 1, 2009.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill passed its first hurdle in Parliament.
The bill, if enacted, would implement some of the strictest smoking laws globally and create a smoke-free generation in the UK.
Under the proposed legislation, individuals turning 15 in the current year or younger would never be legally sold tobacco.
The legal age for purchasing cigarettes in England would incrementally rise each year until it becomes illegal for the entire population, with a target implementation year of 2027.
The UK’s approach appears to be inspired by a similar law in New Zealand, although the New Zealand law was later repealed.
Further steps, including votes in the House of Lords, are required before the bill becomes law, but it could potentially be enacted before the general election expected in the second half of 2024.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the plans for the smoking ban during a conference speech in October of the previous year.

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar launched the first of its kind ‘Millets Experience Centre’(MEC) at Dilli Haat in New Delhi on 28 April.
The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) in association with the Ministry of Agriculture has set up the Millets Experience Centre.
It aims to increase awareness about millet and encourage its adoption among the general public.
Acting on India’s proposal supported by 72 countries, the United Nations General Assembly declared the year 2023 as the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023).

Dubai-based airline Emirates has launched the world’s first robotic check-in assistant named Sara.
The robot is equipped with facial recognition technology and can match customers’ faces with scanned passports, check passengers in, and guide them to the luggage drop area.
City Check-in and Travel Store in Dubai’s Financial District allows customers to drop off their luggage up to 24 hours before their flight and up to 4 hours before their flight and offers a variety of check-in options, including self-check-in -Includes kiosks, dedicated desks with Emirates agents and Sara’s assistance.
The robot is equipped with facial recognition technology and can print boarding passes to make the check-in process more efficient. Sara is also portable and can move around to help those in need. Sources reveal that future iterations of the Sarah will also have weapons that can carry goods.
In addition to the new check-in facility, Emirates passengers with a valid boarding pass will also have access to select lifestyle amenities at ICD Brookfield Place, as well as exclusive discounts and special offers at a range of restaurants, gyms and luxury stores.

India and the UK (United Kingdom) will jointly create an India-UK “net zero” innovation virtual centre.
This was announced by Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh at the India-UK Science and Innovation Council meeting in the presence of United Kingdom Minister George Freeman.
India-UK “NET Zero” Innovation Virtual Centre which will provide a platform to bring stakeholders from both countries together to work in some of the focus areas including Decarbonization of manufacturing process & transport systems and Green Hydrogen as renewable source.
The Government of India has launched several major initiatives such as the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber Physical Systems (ICPS); Quantum Computing and Communications; Launched several major initiatives such as supercomputing, electric mobility, green hydrogen, etc., which provide new opportunities for collaboration.

Enrollment under the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) has crossed the 5.20 crore mark.

The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) has crossed the 5.20 crore mark in total enrolment as of 31 March 2023.
The scheme has seen a growth of over 20%, enrolling more than 1.19 crore new subscribers in the financial year 2022-23.
The total assets under management (AUM) in APY is over Rs. 27,200 crore, and the scheme has generated an investment return of 8.69% since its inception.
In the public sector banks (PSBs) category, nine banks achieved the annual target, while Bank of India, State Bank of India and Indian Bank opened more than hundred APY accounts per branch.
Under the category of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), 32 banks achieved the annual target, while Jharkhand State Gramin Bank, Vidarbha Konkan Gramin Bank, Tripura Gramin Bank and Baroda Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank opened more than 160 APY accounts per branch.
12 states have achieved their annual targets with the help of their respective State Level Banker’s Committee (SLBCs).

Atal Pension Yojana (APY) :

Under the APY, subscribers receive a guaranteed pension ranging from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 5,000 per month from the age of 60 years, depending on their contributions.
After the death of the subscriber, his/her spouse gets the same pension, and on the death of both the subscriber spouse, the accumulated pension amount till the age of 60 years will be given to the nominee.

The meeting of the Defense Ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was held on 28 April 2023 in New Delhi.
India became a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2017 and is chairing it for the first time since then.
Defense ministers of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are participating in the meeting. India has invited Belarus and Iran as observer countries in the meeting. The Defense Minister of Pakistan is attending the meeting through virtual medium.
The ministers will discuss matters relating to regional peace and security, counter-terrorism efforts within the SCO and an effective multilateralism.
India is committed to strengthen the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation-SCO to effectively deal with the challenges being faced by its member countries. First woman Rafale pilot in IAF team for multi-nation exercise to be held in France.

The first woman pilot (Shivangi Singh) of the Indian Air Force to fly the Rafale fighter jet is part of the Indian Air Force contingent participating in the multinational exercise Orion in France.
The officers are in France to participate in the multinational exercise where India has sent its Rafale aircraft for the first time outside the country.
Shivangi Singh joined the Indian Air Force in 2017 and joined the second batch of women fighter pilots of the Indian Air Force. Before flying Rafale, Shivangi had also flown MiG-21 Bison aircraft.
Shivangi hails from Varanasi and is part of the Golden Arrows Squadron of the IAF based in Ambala, Punjab.
Shivangi Singh became the first woman fighter pilot to fly Rafale after being selected as a Rafale pilot in 2020 after a rigorous selection process.

BCAS commemorates its 37th Raising Day.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the national regulator tasked with ensuring security in the civil aviation sector, celebrated its 37th Foundation Day on 27 April in New Delhi.
During the inaugural session of the two-day event, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Gen (Dr.) V.K. Singh (Retd) also presented awards to the personnel selected as best screeners in various categories. General (Dr.) V.K. President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service on the occasion of Republic Day 2022 and Police Medal for Meritorious Service on the occasion of Republic Day 2023 were awarded by Singh to the officers of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security was established in January 1978 as a cell in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The organization was proposed to be set up on the recommendation of the Pandey Committee constituted in the wake of the hijacking of the Indian Airlines flight on 10 September 1976.
The primary duty of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security is to provide complete security of civil aviation process operations against acts of unlawful interference. This bureau is responsible for laying down standards for the purpose of safety in respect of civil flights operating to/from India and ensuring their compliance through regular inspections and safety audits.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is inaugurating 91 FM transmitters to improve radio connectivity in India.
The initiative aims to enhance FM coverage in aspirational districts and border areas.
With this extension of FM service of All India Radio, an additional two crore people, who did not have access to this medium, will now be covered. As a result, the coverage will be expanded in an area of about 35,000 sq km.
These transmitters have been installed in 84 districts of 18 states and two union territories.

The 7th edition of joint military exercise “AJEYA WARRIOR-23” between India and United Kingdom (England) is being conducted from 27 April to 11 May 2023 at Salisbury Plains, United Kingdom.
‘Exercise AJEYA WARRIOR’ is a biennial training program of India with the United Kingdom, which is conducted alternately in the United Kingdom and India. The previous edition of this exercise was conducted in October 2021 at Chaubatia in Uttarakhand.
Troops from the 2nd Royal Gorkha Rifles from the United Kingdom and troops from the Bihar Regiment of the Indian Army are participating in the exercise. The Indian Army contingent arrived at Breeze Norton on 26 April 2023 with indigenous weapons and equipment from the C-17 aircraft of the Indian Air Force.
The scope of the exercise includes Command Post Exercise (CPX) at Battalion level and Field Training Exercise (FTX) at Company level. During this exercise, the participants will participate in various missions testing their operational skills in various simulated situations. In addition, they will showcase their tactical exercises and learn from each other’s operational experience.
The aim of the exercise is to build positive military-to-military relations, adopt each other’s best practices and enhance the ability to work together while undertaking company-level sub-conventional operations in urban and semi-urban environments under UN mandate. Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched Liquid Nano DAP Urea of Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative-IFFCO in New Delhi on 26th April.
The government is emphasizing on innovation for land enrichment.
Liquid DAP will be a historic step in the future in the field of fertilizers which will make the country self-sufficient in this sector.
It will reduce the cost of urea and increase the income of the farmers. It will also help farmers in organic farming and save people from health related problems.
The effect of one bottle of 500 ml of Nano DAP on the crop is equivalent to that of a 45 kg bag of granular urea.
IFFCO has produced 90 Lakh metric tonnes of fertilizer out of the 132 Lakh metric tonnes of fertilizer produced by cooperative societies in the country.
The infrastructure to make about 17 crore Nano Urea bottles has been built up in the country.
The launch of Nano Urea was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2021.

The Chandrayaan mission of the Japanese private company ISpace Inc. has suffered a setback.
In this way, Japan’s dream of landing its own lander on the lunar surface has remained incomplete.
The name of this lander is Hakuto-R Mission 1. Japanese startup iSpace Inc said its attempt to land on the lunar surface failed after it lost contact with its Hakuto-R mission lander.
It is believed that the lander rover fell victim to the accident while trying to land fast.
This satellite of the Japanese company was launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida in December 2022 by a SpaceX rocket. So far only America, Soviet Union and China have successfully landed on the moon. Indian and Israeli landing attempts have failed.

An iconic Sharjah Cricket Stadium stand has been renamed after Sachin Tendulkar at a special ceremony in the United Arab Emirates to honor the Indian cricket legend on his 50th birthday on 24th April.
The West Stand at the iconic stadium has been renamed as ‘Sachin Tendulkar Stand’.
The Master Blaster has fond memories of this stadium. Exactly 25 years before the stand was renamed, Tendulkar had created a ‘Desert Storm’ at this stadium by scoring two consecutive centuries against Australia in the 1998 Coca-Cola Cup.
This stadium is special for Sachin Tendulkar in another way. Of the record 49 centuries he has scored around the world, seven of them have been scored at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Former Punjab Chief Minister and Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal has passed away at the age of 95 in Mohali on 25th April 2023.
Parkash Singh Badal is a well-known political figure in India, particularly in the state of Punjab. He was born on 8 December, 1927, in Abul Khurana near Malout.
Badal started his political career as a member of the Indian National Congress, but later joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a regional party in Punjab.
He was elected to the state Assembly for the first time in 1957 as a Congress nominee from Malout, and later became an MLA for 11 terms, losing only twice.
Badal became the Chief Minister of Punjab for the first time in 1970, heading a coalition government. He later served as Chief Minister for a total of five terms, from 1977 to 1980, 1997 to 2002, 2007 to 2012, and 2012 to 2017, making him one of the longest-serving Chief Ministers in India.
He is known for his focus on agriculture and rural development, and his efforts to promote economic growth in Punjab. The 6th edition of Air Force Exercise Cope India-2023 was conducted during the last two weeks at Air Force Stations located at Kalaikunda, Panagarh and Agra.
It is part of a regular air exercise between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the United States Air Force (USAF), which is slated to conclude on 24 April 2023.
Frontline aircraft such as Rafale, Tejas, Sukhoi-30MKI, Jaguar, C-17 and C-130 participated in the exercise from the Indian Air Force.
F-15 ‘Strike Eagle’ fighter jets, C-130, MC-130J, C-17 and B1B strategic bombers participated from the US Air Force side.
Air personnel from Japan’s Air Self Defense Force also participated in the exercise as observers.
This joint exercise provided a valuable opportunity for participants from all countries to share their views and learn by imbibing best practices through mutual cooperation, exchange and joint missions.
