Ajit Agarkar Appointed Chairman of Senior Men’s Cricket Selection Committee

Former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar was appointed as the Chairman of Senior Men’s Selection Committee by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on 4 July 2023. The Selection committee includes Ajit Agarkar, Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, and Sridharan Sharath. Agarkar, was made chairperson based on seniority which considers the total number of Test matches played.

Agarkar, a former India all-rounder, had an impressive cricket career, representing the country in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and four T20Is. He played a significant number of matches across various formats. Notably, he was part of India’s victorious T20 World Cup squad in 2007. Agarkar still holds the record for the fastest half-century by an Indian batter in ODIs, achieved in just 21 balls against Zimbabwe in 2000. He was also the fastest to reach 50 ODI wickets for almost a decade, achieving the milestone in only 23 matches.

Annual Kanwar Yatra has begun in different parts of the country on 4 July 2023

The annual Kanwar Yatra has begun in different parts of the country on 4 July 2023. The yatra will pass through several districts in Uttar Pradesh, and devotees will collect sacred water from the river Ganga.

Devotees chant slogans and sing bhajans and kirtans during the yatra. Some participants cover the yatra on foot, while others use personal vehicles or receive assistance from NGOs.

Uttarakhand is expecting a large number of Kanwariyas this year, and the state government has made special arrangements. Helicopter showers flowers on Kanwariyas upon reaching Haridwar. The administration has provided basic facilities and water sprinklers to beat the heat. The Mela area has been divided into superzones, zones, and sectors for security and monitoring with drone cameras. The Kanwar Yatra concludes with Jala Abhishek performed by the Kanwadis in temples.

The Uttar Pradesh government has made extensive arrangements and police are keeping strict vigil along the yatra route. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed the installation of CCTV cameras and deployment of divers, and marking of Kanwar camps in advance. In the previous year, a large number of devotees visited Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi during the holy month of Shravan.

SGX Nifty is now Gift Nifty : Trading Shifts to GIFT City in Gandhinagar

The SGX Nifty has started trading as GIFT Nifty at GIFT City in Gandhinagar on July 3, 2023. NSE’s international contracts, previously traded in Singapore, will now be traded at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

The migration of GIFT-NIFTY to GIFT City will strengthen GIFT-IFSC as a global hub for international financial products and services.

GIFT Nifty will have two trading sessions: the first session from 6:30 am to 3:40 pm IST and the second session from 5 pm to 2:45 am.

Nifty stands for ‘National Stock Exchange Fifty’ and is the index for the National Stock Exchange. SGX stands for Singapore Exchange (SGX).

RAPIDX, India’s first regional train service, will commence operations in July

The RAPIDX, India’s first regional train service, will commence operations in July on a 17-kilometer priority section. The five stations along the route are Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and the Duhai Depot. The Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) includes this section.

The safety approvals for the project have been obtained from the commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). The project is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon.

The trains have been named RAPIDX to ensure easy readability and pronunciation in various languages. The name represents speed, progress, next-generation technology, new-age mobility solution, youth, optimism, and energy.

Micron Technology Signs MoU with Gujarat Government for Semiconductor Unit in Sanand

  1. Micron Technology Inc signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 28 June 2023 with the Gujarat government to establish a semiconductor unit in Sanand near Ahmedabad.
  2. The project aims to create a semiconductor Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) facility on 93 acres of land in Sanand GIDC-II industrial estate.
  3. The facility will focus on transforming wafers into Ball Grid Array (BGA)-integrated circuit packages, memory modules, and solid-state drives.
  4. The project is expected to cost Rs 22,500 crore and create 5,000 direct jobs.
  5. The facility is targeted to be commissioned within 18 months.
  6. The MoU signing ceremony took place in the presence of Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and Micron Technology senior vice-president Gursharan Singh.
  7. This is the second MoU signed by the Gujarat government with a semiconductor manufacturer. The first was signed with the Foxconn-Vedanta joint venture.
  8. The Gujarat government had earlier selected Dholera SIR as the location for the Foxconn-Vedanta unit, but formal approval from the Central government is still pending.
  9. Union Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the historic significance of this project and stated that it is a significant step towards India becoming self-reliant in manufacturing memory chips.
  10. India currently imports semiconductors worth Rs 3 lakh crore, including around Rs 1 lakh crore worth of memory cards. Micron is one of the major manufacturers of memory cards.
  11. The project is seen as India’s move towards achieving self-sufficiency (Aatma Nirbhar) in the production of memory chips.
